Lake Michigan Ice Breaks Record; Great Lakes Hit 2nd Highest Level

CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Lake Michigan set a new record for ice coverage over the weekend.

The National Weather Service said the cold start to March caused ice levels on the lake to increase quickly, pushing ice coverage to 93.29 percent on Saturday. That broke the record of 93.1 percent set in 1977.

By Monday, significantly warmer weather had reduced ice levels on Lake Michigan to 77 percent.

Overall, the Great Lakes were just shy of setting a record in recent days. On Thursday, ice coverage for all five lakes combined was at 92.19 percent, good for second all-time. The record was set in 1979, when ice coverage for the entire Great Lakes reached 94.7 percent.

By Monday, those levels had dropped to 83.94 percent.

Wendella Boats Docked!
From CBS Chicago 22 West Washington Street, Chicago IL

CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — This year, Wendella Sightseeing Boats is celebrating its 80th season. But for the first time ever, the season is delayed because of our long, icy winter.

It became painfully clear about a week and a half ago that Wendella would have to delay the start of its season.

And that’s bad news for the 80-year-old company.

“It certainly is. Usually we would be starting on Friday for our 2014 season.”

Craig Wenokur is vice president and general manager of Wendella Sightseeing Boats.

“We’re stuck in the ice and cold down in Dolton, Illinois, right now.”

Dolton is where Wendella’s four tour boats and four water taxis are kept in the off-season.

Wenokur says the season will start April 4 at the latest – maybe earlier.

He says Wendella is…

Hide Your Schools, Hide Your Children, Hide Your Homes, Cause He’s Wrecking it All

I Teach

A poem written by 4 TEAM Englewood Public High School students about all that Mayor Rahm Emanuel is doing wrong in Chicago. These students wrote this piece and took part in the Louder Than A Bomb spoken word competition put on yearly by Young Chicago Authors here in Chicago.

Hammer in one hand paint brush in the other
Rahm Emanuel is single handedly destroying our city
Mr. wreck it Rahm
look what Chicago is becoming
bending the rules to fit in the lie of building a new chicago
building new streets
when his own plan got some pot holes

Tearing down our dreams
its getting really windy in these streets
Red X’s mark the spots where his wrecking balls are next to drop

We are not included in the Blue Print of the New Chicago: we’re being pushed out
our buildings transformed into condos – and we know those AINT…

Mayor Bill de Blasio traveled to Chicago yesterday for a panel discussion with three of his most high-profile colleagues, including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Atlanta’s Kasim Reed and Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel.

With political consultant David Axelrod leading the conversation, the group acted like a lineup of old friends, ribbing each other over recent weather woes, and joining together to herald the role of cities and criticize the federal government’s lack of investment in them.

From CBS Chicago 22 W. Washington Street, Chicago IL 60602

CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — A trade newspaper for the city’s taxi industry has threatened to out five aldermen who it claims are “secretly gay,” unless the City Council bans ride-sharing services like Uber, Lyft, and SideCar.

In an editorial in The Chicago Dispatcher, publisher George Lutfallah said the trade publication “has learned that five of the city’s 50 aldermen are closeted homosexuals. In the next issue of this newspaper, set to be published early next month, we will disclose their names unless our demands are met.”

Among a list of 10 demands, Lutfallah said he wants the city to ban ride-sharing services, and to “actively enforce” the current regulations for taxis.

“The city is moving forward and will steamroll our industry if we don’t act in earnest. They did it to my grandfather more than a hundred years ago when they destroyed his horse-drawn-carriage business by allowing horseless machines to…
